Maximizing Rent Day: Strategies for Double Points Every Month
For years, unlike a mortgage, which builds equity, or credit card spending, which generates points, rent was simply money gone. Bilt Rewards changed this paradigm in 2021 by creating the first loyalty program that allows consumers to earn high-value transferable points on rent payments without the typical 3% transaction fee.
In 2026, Bilt has matured into one of the most strategic ecosystems in the credit card industry, often mentioned in the same breath as titans like Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards.
How the Program Works: The Rent Revolution
The core mechanics of Bilt Rewards are designed to solve the “transaction fee” problem. Traditionally, if you tried to pay rent with a credit card, your landlord or payment portal would charge a 2.5% to 3% convenience fee, effectively wiping out the value of any rewards earned.
Bilt bypasses this through two primary methods:
Advertisements
The Bilt Mastercard®: When you pay rent through the Bilt app using their co-branded card, Bilt generates a unique routing and account number. To your landlord, it looks like an ACH (direct deposit) transfer, which is usually free. Bilt then charges your card for the amount, and you earn 1x points.
The Bilt Rewards Network: Even if you don’t have the credit card, you can earn points if you live in a “Bilt Alliance” property (managed by groups like Blackstone, Related, or Greystar). In these buildings, you can earn points for signing a lease, renewing, or even for non-rent activities like using the building’s gym.
Earning Points: The “Rent Plus” Strategy
While rent is the hook, the Bilt Mastercard is the engine that accelerates point accumulation. The earning structure is competitive even for non-renters:
1x on Rent: Earn 1 point per $1 spent on rent (up to 100,000 points per calendar year) with no transaction fees.
3x on Dining: This includes sit-down restaurants, takeout, and delivery.
2x on Travel: Valid for bookings made directly with airlines, hotels, and car rental agencies.
1x on Everything Else: All other non-category spend.
The 5-Transaction Rule: To earn points in any given statement period, you must use your Bilt Mastercard at least 5 times. If you don’t hit this minimum, you earn 0 points for that month, including on your rent payment.
Bilt has turned the 1st of the month into a monthly holiday. On “Rent Day,” the earning rates on the card double (excluding rent): 6x on Dining, 4x on Travel, and 2x on other spend. They also host “Rent Free” game shows and “Rent Giveaway” sweepstakes within the app, making the most expensive day of the month actually feel rewarding.
Where to Use Your Points: The Transfer Powerhouse
Bilt points are arguably the most valuable “currency” in the travel world because of their transfer partners. While you can use points to pay rent or buy home decor in the Bilt Collection, doing so offers poor value (usually about 0.5 to 0.7 cents per point).
The real value (often 2.0 cents per point or more) is found by transferring to:
World of Hyatt: Generally considered the most valuable hotel loyalty program.
Airline Partners: Bilt has a massive roster, including American Airlines AAdvantage (a very rare partner), United Airlines, Air Canada Aeroplan, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, and Virgin Atlantic.
By transferring 50,000 Bilt points to an airline partner, you could potentially book a one-way Business Class seat to Europe.
How to Join Bilt Rewards
Joining is the simplest part of the process. You can download the Bilt Rewards app and create a free account to join the Bilt Alliance and earn points on building-specific activities. To earn points on rent at any apartment and unlock the high-multiplier categories, you must apply for the Bilt Mastercard. There is no annual fee, making it a “low-risk, high-reward” addition to your wallet.
